When you install the CS5 suite, one of its components IS the CS5 media
encoder.
Since you have a new Dell with a 64-bit OS, you should probably think about
installing CS5 as soon as possible. Your fears of CS5 are not necessary.
Playing around with CS4 (a 32-bit application) on a 64-bit system isn't
going to help you much. In any regard, CS5 is a solid application, and once
you install it and use it, you'll find it works very much like CS4 (no
learning curve) and CS5 has corrected a lot of bugs that are in CS4. You
will not have to redo anything with your unfinished projects - whatever
works in CS4 will work the same way in CS5.
I encourage you to switch to CS5 and finish the unfinished CS4 projects
using CS5.

thanks for the advice. I actually did the update 4.2.1- was just wondering
if i missed anything by not installing the previous updates.
