Hi Robert,

For recording cars and air planes and stage shows and large noisy
animals the DR100 will be fine. For recording small animals the
pre-amps will be too soft unless you use very sensitive XLR mikes
with built-in pre-amps. It's better to have the pre-amps in the mike
at the start of the cable then having them in the recorder at the end
of the cable - because at the end of the cable with amplifying the
mike signal you also amplify the cable noise and distortion.

I don't know what kind of camera you use but I work with the
Panasonic GH2 and now use the Beachtek DSLR XLR adapter with built-in
pre-amps and it's great, very very very sensitive. In another forum
the other day someone wrote that the Sony sound recorders have very
sensitive pre-amps and good overall quality. The Zoom does not only
have a sync problem, the pre-amps are useless. The Zoom and Tascam
were designed for recording musical instruments, I think the Sony are
more aimed at other fields.

I never got the Lithium battery of the DR100 to work. I think to
charge it you need to connect the DR100 to a 5 volt adapter and I
never got hold of one but apparently you can safely connect it to a 6
volt adapter as well. But not to a 12 volt external hard disk adapter.
