1) I'm running the 4.2.1.20 client with a 4.1.3 server, no problems.
I dont' think running with older servers is supported, but may still work.
(Servers older than 4.1 aren't supported, period...)

2) Once the first backup has occurred, no. Clients are upward, not downward
compatible.

You can restore data backed up by and old client, with a newer client.
But you can't restore data backed up with a newer client, using an old
client.

Hi Eric, Wanda, Arshad and the rest of the world!

The Win2000 server has plenty of RAM and CPU! Tons and tons.. It's just a
fileserver, the only thing particular is that it contains a large amount of
small files.. Most of my users are programmers..

1. Is client-version dependent of server version? Can I safely upgrade my
win2000 server without having to change anything on the ADSM server?

2. If I upgrade, can I restore with a lower version-number (older) client?

Thank you very much !!!

Tor Rysstad

Duh. Yeah, too early for me this morning!
Sorry, I meant 4.2.1.20.

Thanks Eric!

Hi Wanda!
I guess you meant upgrading to 4.2.1.20?

I have seen that happen occasionally on our Win2K machines running the 4.1.3
clients (although here it was every few days, not every 10 minutes)...
You can try upgrading to the 4.1.2.20 client, that fixed a lot of misc.
problems for me on Win2K machines, including the "program memory exhausted"
messages.
Unless this machine really IS very short on memory...

Hi Eric and the rest of the list !

Thank you very much for the hint! (And for the patience..)

DSMERROR.log contains loads of this:
04/03/2002 11:16:59 ConsoleEventHandler(): Caught Ctrl-C console event .
04/03/2002 11:16:59 ConsoleEventHandler(): Cleaning up and terminating
Process ...
I guess it goes without saying that I am not pressing Ctrl+C.. honest.. Is
this a known error?

Also this one is occur frequently:
04/03/2002 10:56:54 Unable to open Acknowledgement Mailslot
'\\.\mailslot\client'.
What does that mean?

04/01/2002 16:59:14 ConsoleEventHandler(): Caught Logoff console event .
04/01/2002 16:59:14 ConsoleEventHandler(): Process Detached.
TSM is running as a service, not as an application.. Or is my server playing
an April 1. prank on me?? Wow, an IBM server with a sense of humor.. :-)

In the DSMSCHED.LOG file (OUCH.. scroll-cramp, scroll-cramp!!!)... I found
this:
03/18/2002 23:59:54 ANS1075E *** Program memory exhausted ***
This occured approx. 1,5 hours after the backup started. The server the
client is running on is working about as hard as Britany Spears' parents..
Looks like a general failure message to me.. Or?

Once again, thank you very, very much for any help or hints!

I guess that most of you fine people understand that I have no idea of what
I am doing.. Perhaps somebody could send me some URLs to TSM related
websites. I guess that might be better... BTW.. www.tivoli.com/support
<http://www.tivoli.com/support> requires an code that I do not have...

Tor Rysstad

Hi Tor!
Are there any messages related to the stop in the dsmsched.log or the
dsmerror.log?

Subject: TSM Client Agent randomly stopping on Windows 2000 SP2

Hello everybody!

First of all, I am sorry if this topic has been discussed before.. I am new
to this group...

I am running a Windows 2000 SP2 server, with IE6 and all the patches/updates
I have found..
Backup is taken to an ADSM server via TSM Backup Client Version 4, Release
1, Level 3.0.

Trouble is; every 10 minutes or so the TSM client agent service stops.. just
like that..

I have made a "net start.. " script that runs every 10 minute, but that's no
good.. :-)

Any reason for this happening known to man? Or to IBM? ....

Patches? Updates? Changes? Magic?

Thank you very much in advance for any help, hints etc!

Tor Arne Rysstad

PS. Does this group have a FAQ or an archive?
