Some ideas:

* I assume that you have reclaimed those tapes contained in the library so
that you dont have too many with lots of "wasted space".

* Identify those tapes that are archives, and remove those. If your
archives are mixed with your backups, then now is the time to "redesign"
and take the archives out - they are "generally" used least for restores.

* Now that you have been using TSM for some time, you may have an idea of
which systems you do more frequent restores to than others. Again with the
redesign, have those systems go to their own set of tapes, and take them
out. (Maybe not straight away, but after a period of time).

How do you manage them?

* You check them out as "mountable but not in library", put them in a safe
place and update TSM with their new location (then if you are hit by a
bus, somebody else knows where they are :-)

* Which ones do you take out? Identify the ones above, then identify the
full ones that havent been written to for the longest time, then beg and
grovel for a bigger library. (TSM will generate a mount request, if it
needs a tape that is mountable but not in the library, so have a process
that can capture that mount request as well, so you dont have mount
requests sitting their for hours and then the tapes go unavailable because
it wasnt satisfied within the mount limit times.)
