It's a better read, and he does, indirectly, make the point about making the
questions about pointers/recursion language agnostic. Since at that point
you interested in their ability to think more than their ability to write
syntax.

In my experience of interviews i've found that having a discussion (making
sure they do most of the talking) about development in general, or about the
problems they've faced in the past, gives me a much better indication about
the persons skill level. It's easier to spot a bullshitter when talking the
whole picture rather than the small details.

I've been in the situation where a developer aced all the Joel test
questions but couldn't code worth a bean, since he just didn't have the
ability to take a large problem and decompose it into the small interview
size chunks.

The problem with asking such questions in technical forums is that they
value technical knowledge....the questions presumes that innate ability is
more important.....so I've probably got what I deserved.
