I hesitate to make comparisons, but I will anyway.
I think the arguments along the lines of "we've done that already" are
quite valid. However, I think Perl itself is at point in its lifespan
where another attempt is a great idea. Many "newer languages" (no names)
encourage and enjoy semi-official mailing lists where newbies feel very
comfortable asking the dumb questions. Perl has resources in every corner
of the web, and in some ways, that fact encourages a "wtf aren't you
reading the FAQ" mentality. It drives newbies away, like it or not.
Nuisance or not, "been done" or not, it is a good idea. Whether it works
will remain to be seen. But I think the time is right, for the exact same
reasons that we perl6 is underway.
