Well, and companies hire people who spend their days writing press
releases and schmoozing the various press in their industry. Tech press
would probably print stuff about perl if anything existed.

Every company with a Unix SA with a reasonable amount of experience uses
Perl...and sed, awk and a fair amount of shell. Noone gets excited about
the SA until something breaks...then we come into sharp focus. There's
noone writing new articles about how exciting the latest plumbing rescue
was so it's gonna be a stretch to think that anyone will read or be
excited about the SA who saved the say with the 8-line perl script. It's
just part of the job.
Currently ;login, the Usenix magazine for SAs, has no regular Perl column
as it used to have and I find that to be a very large hole in the
landscape of things.
Everyone wants to snare the big corporation when right behind you in the
dungarees and ancient chicago cubs baseball cap is the 3rd richest man on
the planet.
