Prizes

I was just musing on the fact that there are numerous well-known and  
prestigious prizes for literary creations, but nothing comparable for  
visual arts accomplishments. There is the Nobel PRize in Literature  
for a large body of work, and a series of Pulitzer prizes for  
journalistic writing, and many others prizes in the field of fiction  
and non-fiction writing. And there are many prizes and awards in the  
performing arts. But there is no outstanding, well-known, highly  
regarded prize or award in any discipline in the visual arts ...  
except perhaps the Macarthur award.

Unless I'm just overlooking some famous one.
Wonder why that is? Wonder what that signifies?
