"A CERTAIN GRACE', by Baltasar Gracian.
"This certain, indefinable grace- the soul of any gift, the life of any
perfection, the brisk dispatch of deeds, the charm of words, and bewitchment
of all good taste- beguiles the intelligence and flees
from explanation.
It is a mysterious formal beauty, the highest quality of any quality. the
other gifts adorn nature, but this one adorns the gifts themselves: it is the
most perfect part of perfection, a kind of transcendent beauty, a spell that
is felt by all.
It consists in a certain dash and spirit, a jaunty elegance, both in saying
and doing, and even in reasoning.
For the most part, it is innate, and it borrows little from observation. Until
now it has never submitted to rules, being superior to any art.
Because it makes off with our taste, some call it ravishment, because
imperceptible, others call esprit, because quick, brio, because courageous,
boldness, because spontaneous, ease. All this shows how hard it is to define,
and how great is our desire to do so.
It would be insulting to confuse this grace with facility. It goes far beyond
an easy manner, and is superior to flair and to style. Although it supposes a
certain disencumbered ease, it adds the quality of perfection.
Actions have their Lucina, and to this certain grace they owe their perfect
birth; because of it they come fully to light.
Without it, even the slightest action is dead, and the greatest perfection
unpleasant. It is something essential, not accidental; no mere ornament, but
the foundation of the most important things in life. Being the soul of beauty,
it is also the spirit of prudence, it is the very life of bravery....."
