Yes -- I was and still am Courbet's small boy -- looking at paintings with
wonder and waiting to be happily surprised.

(in Courbet's painting - one might notice how a top corner of the canvas he's
paintings is draped with cloth -- so much for his concern with all of its
edges!)

I realize, of course, that there's high status in the designation of expertise
-- and so we see it often defended here with sarcasm and arrogance --
especially when it has difficulty sustaining a challenge.

But authority doesn't interest me as much as enjoyment.

                        *************

In Courbet's great allegorical painting of his studio he shows a small boy
watching him paint. Courbet never explained this painting but scholars have
assumed the artist meant the boy to represent
the innocent-eyed future that would appreciate his paintings.
