Chris cites my remark:

> TO DERIVE AN AESTHETIC EXPERIENCE FROM A WORK THAT DID NOT OCCASION IT IN ME
> BEFORE."

Well, so did I, a little, as I wrote it, because I could think of events that
make it wrong as phrased: "Experts" in many genres have sent me to
contemplate works that I hadn't seen before. Some of them occasioned a.e.'s in
me.
Obviously if I'd never seen a work before, it had never occasioned an a.e. in
me
before. So the expert's remark did etc.

But I didn't expatiate with that qualification because I wanted the damn
all-caps line to "land", and I felt that required making it as short as
possible.
I've skimmed this morning's postings, and a number of them -- particularly
Imago's -- make good points I might have obviated by elaborating on
qualifications/explanations that I had in mind but chose to suppress in an
effort to make
the posting semi-readable.

My postings are tediously long already, in good part because I try to
anticipate counter-arguments. But from time to time I force myself to say the
hell
with it, this thing is already a thousand words. I'll reread this morning's
postings, slowly this time, and try to respond to some of them.
