"Reality is a product of the most august imagination." Isn't this the credo of a monotheist ? It's difficult for many of us to accept -- because that "august imagination" has obviously imagined so many horrible things.
Perhaps Wallace Stevens was only referring to his own reality and his own poetic imagination - but he didn't say that, did he? Whatever -- it still is a curious quote with which to introduce an utterly secular thesis that explores connections between artists and neurological science -- and might show that Lehrer is not intending to take any of the ideas that follow very seriously. Which is a pretty good reason for some readers, like Cheerskep, to get off the train before it leaves the station - and for others, like Michael, to look forward to a long, happy ride. ____________________________________________________________ Be the envy of your friends.
