I've graded thousands of papers as a professor. I had to interpret them. Even that greatest of all judges, Supreme Court Justice Oliver W. Holmes, argued that jurors had really made up their minds before the evidence was presented. The belief comes first. What the evidence had to do was to create disbelief in the a-priori belief.
