Santayana?  The interesting thing about his outlook is that he is a champion of 
harmony, by which he means that all the parts must reinforce the whole, 
suggesting a whole in any part.  He contrasts that with his view of "barbaric" 
art in which the parts may be fascinating, even beautiful, but the whole is 
discordant.  Now that Barbaric disharmony is precisely what I think of his 
work.  We can find wonderful sentences here and there but the whole he tries to 
make of them together is stilted, full of dead-ends, enshrined in elitist, 
gentlemanly, Victorianism. Santayana is about as much of a relic skeleton as 
one could find...but a bone fragment here and there is worth examining in the 
light of today's more skeptical metaphysics.
