Santayana? The interesting thing about his outlook is that he is a champion of harmony, by which he means that all the parts must reinforce the whole, suggesting a whole in any part. He contrasts that with his view of "barbaric" art in which the parts may be fascinating, even beautiful, but the whole is discordant. Now that Barbaric disharmony is precisely what I think of his work. We can find wonderful sentences here and there but the whole he tries to make of them together is stilted, full of dead-ends, enshrined in elitist, gentlemanly, Victorianism. Santayana is about as much of a relic skeleton as one could find...but a bone fragment here and there is worth examining in the light of today's more skeptical metaphysics. WC
