If an acceptable contrary state can be rationally allowed to
exist, as compliments and contradictions are, then the ugly could
be of art and bring some joy. This approach seems reasonable,
because we could justly doubt a truth or justly believe a
falsity, depending on the grounds. The issue seems to be whether
these results would be good. For example it may be possible for a
beautiful form in art to carry an ugly content, or for an ugly
form in art to carry a beautiful content, yet both could fail to
evoke pleasure or dare we say an aesthetic experience, but it is
unclear to me if this in either event would be good. Furthermore,
it might be well argued that the good of any art must always be
found in its form alone, aside from any content or context.
