Chris,
At that time (late 40's early 50's)I was also henry lion's assistant.
mold making, enlarging his with his pantograph. He was trying to be
more modern in his work but felt unable to realize it to his
satisfaction.
Realism was too much imbedded in his natural habit, his training.
I feel ,he taught me realism without destroying my natural instinct.
I did think of Picasso as we think of him today, but more like seeing a
strange work of art in the in Art In America today. I liked his freedom
of expression, but It disturb me too much, yet I didn't want to have
regrets over my work in my old age like Henry. He and I generally
art ... what is it... what is beauty... what makes a good composition.
He advised me against realism. He said learn it well, and don"t let it
control you, but only use it as a guide to your own expression.
I think thats why I appreciate Picasso so much now. Had he answered
me, i think he might have said the same thing....I'll never know.
Don't for get, LA in the 20's and 30's was a hick town compared to
New York.

Too bad Picasso didn't answer!
But, I don't understand why you asked Picasso about the meaning of
"aesthetic"
instead of someone else.
Was it just because you were especially interested in Spain and
Picasso was
the best known Spanish artist - or did you disagree with your
friends, and
have a strong affinity for some of his works ? (if so.... which
ones ?)

Actually, it was in the late late forties when i finish art at
Otis Art
School, in Los Angeles. During the middle thirties our family
always toned in
to the Spanish News in LA radio, so we followed the civil war in
Spain on a
daily basis. I distinctly remember the daily phrase "bombardiaron
Madrid", and
all the details, before leaving for school every morning. So my
interest in
Spain and the popularity of Franco's close ties to German Fascismo
was always
in my mind. Picasso was not well thought of in my circle of friends
But,that was when the word "aesthetics" had a mystery sound to it,
which was
not clarified even after two semesters of Philosophy in college.
I struggled with it on my own till I was satisfied with my own
conclusion. My
Mother was no help in translating the word aesthetics in spanish
when I wrote
to Picasso, but it was pretty close to what i now know as astetica.
I wanted him to tell me If i understood the meaning i had been
preaching to
myself since those days. I send it to a City in France i don't
recall. He
never answered. I think the between Picasso,Henry Moore, Naguchi
and my
pre-columbian Nayarit, Mexico west, is quite enough for this me.
