Frances to Chris... The field and study of architecture seems to exist throughout the whole world, but architecture may also be a subject for which no global theory can be framed or written. Architecture after all is not as prone to empirical research as is say gravity, for which a good global theory has been written, because its theory is a natural law based on proven fact. In a way architecture is like medicine where both are more of tech that straddles the polemic brackets between art and science. Theoretically, it may be that architecture should best be held as a bridge that links the poles. In light of the difficulties faced by experts, to make a good global theory of architecture, my leaning might therefore fall in the direction of seeking a philosophic relativism where there might be several theories.
