You're right, Kate.
All this silly Templar stuff is just avoiding the real issue, which is
whether it's really so obvious "that our perception -- the process
of making
sense of sensory impressions -- is a process of creating metaphors
(as-if
imaginings) as stand-ins for the real world."
I suppose I try to do that when I'm looking at one of those
fiendishly
difficult diagrams that are supposed to help one assemble a widget.
But otherwise, my mind is running wild and free when it's looking
at things --
especially things in an art gallery -- where I'm not especially
concerned with
anything like "the real world" and if I'm "creating metaphors",
they are
mostly as plentiful, undefined, and effervescent as carbonated
bubbles that
vanish as soon as they're noticed.
So I just don't think that "creating metaphors" is an appropriate
phrase for
certain kinds of perception.(especially aesthetic)
Chris,
I've always been under the understanding that it is specially
appropriate in
aesthetics. Metaphors and symbols of our personal perception of the
essence
is how we personally create real stuff. Art is real, but the
personal perception
of it is just a personal perception. It's too late in life for me
think other wise.

What about you? (you know - you are permitted to discuss issues
other than my
miserable social skills. BTW - have you ever considered a career as
a grade
school teacher? I think you'd make a very good one!)
