I understand the problem with word 'spiritual'. In the USA it is more related to religion. Organized religion never played role in my life in USSR or the USA, but 'soul' demands 'food'. Rand would agree with Boris that "we have to separate pure utilitarian art with fine art." - and her definition of art does just that by focusing attention on the "artist's metaphysical value judgments". The more such judgments are apparent, the more something can be considered and judged as art, rather than merely a chair, a necklace, or a hammer.. (one can, of course, consider a chair - especially a Shaker chair - to be the expression of metaphysical value judgments - but those judgments are less apparent than they would be in a novel where a Shaker character was articulating his beliefs) But I don't think that the word 'spiritual' was very important to her (does she even use it all - except as descriptive of what irrational people believe?) What is "spirit" ? Is it a " fact based on observation and measurement that can be examined for truth or falsity" ?
