It followed on the idea of finish - I thought that your reference in this context to photo-realism which has been with us since the 60s as a touch point for contemporary painting - was a curious reference - I would think that in terms of Manet the work of an artist like Luc Tuysman's, Elizabeth Peyton, or Mary Heilmann would have been of interest in terms of finish
