Funny, I would say that prostitutes are serious practitioners!  But if you use 
the term as a stand-in for artists and other people who make things as well as 
they can, and aim to sell them to earn a living, then you are misusing the term 
or abusing the professionals in the sex business, probably both.

Maybe you should take a look at art history.  There you will discover that a 
large number of the world's great artists since the Ren. were also very mindful 
of their cash flow.
