I think Berg has the current romanticized view of the importance of the"individual creative initiative",that the individual impulse necessarily adds value to the work,that the text lies inert and frozen until many other creative initiatives have explained it. In Berg's view these additional initiatives seem to be more important than the author or the author's intent. The work is not truly created until Berg has read it and explained it to others,using his own words and making his opinions the reason for the work. That the author is unaware of Berg's involvement or that the readers don't want to hear from Berg is not important,given that the work doesn't exist until Berg has acted.
