To run all the computer electronics off of. And in case of an accident, the car automatically severs the high voltage battery connection so it needs power for the computer, hazard lights, horn,etc which means needing a 12v battery.
Every electric car today and hybrid has the 12v battery still. The good thing is this battery charges from the high voltage battery so it should almost never run dead and lasts awhile due to no deep discharges.
