I figured out the first poke but not the second.

It wasn't hard to get, I wasn't a programmer and I had discovered it after a 
few days of SM and AP memory dumping through scripts and telnet PEEKs, looking 
at diffs and fiddling around with POKE commands. Then I mentioned it to Mr. H 
from down under and he had a more reliable POKE address that survived config 
changes better IIRC.

That was like 10 years ago, afterwards I didn't really keep note of the final 
commands / "cheat code" as you call it but it was an educational challenge.

Bill,

Got it.  Gave up on trying to do an update directly on the unit.  Just set th 
AP to auto-update and it took care of it for me.
