I hired an Amish craftsman in Missouri to make a 6’ diameter table with a 3’
turntable for me about 35 years ago. A few months later I went out to see how
he was doing, his home and shop were totally new. The place had totally burned
down. He said they had it back up in 3 days though. He asked me if I had paid
him as he lost all his records. I told him no, not even a deposit.

I came back a month or two later to see if he was done. He was. I still have
the table, it is a family heirloom now.
But that is all a digression, the thing I wanted to say was his whole shop was
run by line shaft. Each table saw, shaper, planer etc had a flat belt up to
the shaft in the rafters. The shaft was powered by a gasoline engine at the
end of the shop. He said each family group decided how much technology they
are going to use. They had a car, painted flat black with a paint brush for
runs into town, mostly to Walmart.

I saw a young man driving a buggy that had dingle balls and a sound system. He
was wearing shades.

Their rules are different in different communities. Some of them allow
electric in a workplace but not in the home.

The cheapest locations for sale have no electricity available at all.

its not overly complicated to wire an unwired home, especially an amish built
home which will follow specific design standards. Also, a lot of amish homes do
have wire present, just not connected. Amish are frugal and hen amenities, but
they are also business savvy and know about potential resale value. the
referenced home has corded machines in the woodshop, so id guess when the
heathens arent looking, the breaker behind the wood panel gets turned on

The community just south of us is 100% off-grid. All of them are solar, and
last I looked a couple also had wind generators.

Friend of mine has set up three homes with solar panels and batteries out
in the desert near us...100% off the grid...

Off grid homes are easy now with LFP batteries, it would just be the
hassle of wiring it, specially as they probably don't use sheet rock
interior walls. So you are probably doing conduit all around the
outside walls. But they probably all have basements that you could
      also wire through.
