I do run MPLS\VPLS. It requires a routed network underneath.

MEF, PBB, PBB-TE, MPLS, VLAN, G.8032, ERPS, VLAN, etc. are all valid 
alternatives to a L3 routed network. All of these are tools in the toolbox. 

If you insist that the only proper tool is a hammer that's your choice - but I 
don't think the results are going to be all that pretty.
