Skate shoes work pretty well for gripping the shingles, as the gravel is a lot like grip tape. However, they have soft soles and the ladder rungs kill your feet after a day or so. Plus, skate shoes have no ankle support. I always prefer boots, as you can lace them up high and you're less likely to roll an ankle.
