We bought a cheap locator to trace an underground power line that we
knew was there. Worked great.
It was Tempo Model 508S
We turned off the circuit, put one lead from the transmitter onto the
"hot" wire and the other to a screwdriver stabbed in the ground. It
worked perfectly.
I'm not sure how it would work on a metal pipe because the whole thing
is grounded. I think you would need an insulated locator wire to be in
the pipe. Maybe you could just use a metal detector for those.

utilities. That covers the big things but what I'm worried about are
underground sprinklers, propane gas lines, dog fence, etc. that are
private and wouldn't be marked by utility companies.
What do you guys do to accurately locate these other things
underground before you trench the yard and cut something important? I
know we can ask the homeowner but they won't know or they'll forget
and we'll have an unhappy customer who is mad at us.
Any ideas for the best tools to trace metal things in the ground to
