My field of expertise is certainly NOT web development, but, I do not know of any technology that was available then that would allow cross browser functionality like airView without using Java. You can do some amazing things now with Javascript/CSS3/HTML5 that work on most current browsers, but, I don't really think you could in 2009. At the time airView was written (before my time here), it was really the only practical choice for cross-browser integration.
