You can use nothing on an N connector under certain circumstances. It is all
based on whether or not water can get into the connector by any other avenue
than the threads. The threads normally will stop the water at the gasket. But
it gets in via the cable or the other mating connector.

Good drip loops are always mandatory. If you have a connector that will accept
heat shrink over the crimp and seals it up very well, and if the make connector
is facing up going into the equipment, It would probably work without anything.
(But the heat shrink at the back of the N connector can hardly be called
nothing). Old RG8 N connectors had a gland with a second gasket at the cable
to connector interface. If you put them on very carefully they were indeed
water tight.

Silicone self-fusing tape. Butyl with vinyl over it is fine but messier.

Who is telling you use nothing?

What do you guys use to seal the connectors on the radio to antenna?

Butyl tape, electoral type or nothing at all…. just curious because am
hearing don’t put nothing at all because it builds up moisture on the connectors

  thanks
