N connectors are supposed to be waterproof as is, but I think water sneaks in under the heatshrink tubing that they put behind the connector.

I can attest that PPC brand compression fittings are truly water proof and don't need any tape. They're $25/each and require a $2000 tool to install them on the cable.....but they're water proof :)

Apart from that, my favorite solution is the adhesive lined heat shrink that was suggested by somebody on this list. I don't imagine it will come off easily, but it's a cheap, clean method.

Silicone self-fusing tape.  Butyl with vinyl over it is fine but messier.
