When faced with the following possibilities:

a) temporary phone system problem
b) out of business

which is more likely? Why do people immediately jump to (b)?

It’s like when people get our voicemail and assume nobody is here. Is that the
only possibility? How about we’re on the phone with someone else? Or went
across the hall to the bathroom?

It’s like they say, when you hear hoofbeats, think horses, not zebras.

I called someone's cell phone and made them aware of it. Their phone
application had just crashed and he's on it "now".
