I think consumerism has done a *lot* of damage to this country, and
other countries are stronger for it. Extreme capitalism mixed with
globalization aiming at an economy with an abundance of expendable
income compared to other countries... bad mix.

We're very much like the Roman empire toward it's fall, we just don't
call the other armies "barbarians" so much anymore. (Well,
sometimes...)
