It’s mostly a good neighbor thing but I also benefit from it indirectly. I benefit in that the more my site is used the more my online reputation is improved and that indirectly drives consulting business my way. I expect that it is a true win/win.
So your instinct to expect a selfish motive (sorry if that is putting words in your mouth) is partially correct. I don’t get anything out of the list other then search engine attention which does in a way put food on the table.
