I don't know if I've just got customers so stupid they could screw up a one car funeral, but I've had some weird issues with customers using ASUS routers. Like establishing a PPPoE session out the WAN side but also exposing the web GUI at port 80 with default credentials on the WAN interface, plus acting as a DHCP server on the WAN side. ASUS has also had some serious vulnerabilities over the years, maybe this guy had an unpatched router. Probably an OK router for a techie but not for a newbie.
