There’s AT&T and Verizon, which are focused on wireless as Faisal says.
Then there’s the remaining scraps of the old Bell System, which will do whatever brings in government subsidies. (Centurylink, Frontier, etc.) The mobile wireless model probably looks like the old ILEC model, where you charged a base rate plus all sorts of additional charges for usage, long distance, and software based features like voicemail, call waiting, etc. In the mobile world it was voice minutes, then text messages, now it’s data plans and overusage. I’m not quite sure why they keep pushing LTE based fixed wireless, unless they intend to charge for usage on that also. The obvious thing would be one family data plan for all your mobile devices plus your fixed wireless at home, but that’s going to have to be unlimited or have a very high data cap if competing with FTTH. The FTTH model probably looks more like the cable TV model, where you sell a bundle of Internet, phone and TV. Without TV, it looks a lot like a dumb pipe, and the former Bell companies swore to never be the dumb pipe again. That’s why you see AT&T and Verizon acquiring content companies. This goes back to the dialup days, when Ma Bell saw all these startups like AOL offering service over POTS service, and Ma Bell wasn’t getting a cut of the revenue. While you may not care too much for this, but the CLEC's business / Wireline business were decimated under then Republican FCC ...(WISP's were spared and actually picked up business from that carnage). At that time the larger ILEC's were focused on wire-line business... Some of you feel the pinch of this when you go looking for Fat Pipes for your Backhaul and get shafted by the only option available to you... That is not a random coincidence... Yes, I am simplifying this.....a lot happen when WISP's were 'sleeping'... Now, I cringe, to see what happens in the coming years, especially since the ILEC's have decided to focus on Wireless, in favor of the wire line... If I was to describe what happened in the wireline world, it would be like... The Republicans shot the small business isp/nsp/clec's in the back, and the Democrats double nailed the coffins so that there was pretty much no chance of possible revival. Non-the less life goes on.. Regards.
