African Cinema Conference presents... Exercise your mind - workshop for scriptwriters
Aspirant scriptwriters are invited to exercise their minds at The Writing Studio’s four-Sunday workshop at the Artscape Resource Centre on August 10, 17, 24 and 31. The practical course gives writers the essential tools and shows how to stay positive, passionate and productive while maintaining realistic goals and expectations about the screenwriting process. Hosted by Artscape Resource Centre, the four- day course takes writers through the process of working on the draft of a script for feature film, television or a stageplay; and also examines the exciting world of contemporary filmmaking. The workshop encourages writers to explore the relationship between structure and the screenplay; examines criteria for a sellable idea; and looks at the art of writing and pitching high concept. It also focuses on elements that make good character and writing dialogue. The facilitator is published playwright Daniel Dercksen, who has been involved in movie journalism for 20 years and has been teaching workshops in scriptwriting during the past five years throughout South Africa and also teaches evening classes in scriptwriting at the City Varsity Film and Television School in Cape Town. The informal workshop is a home to writers who want to make the most of their creative talent and write a screenplay that works and will be accepted on the international market. The workshop is ideal for writers who would like to present a professional draft of their work to international producers. It is a motivational and educational experience to inspire and encourage South African writers to share their culture, experience and history with the world. It is a great training ground for first-timers and inexperienced writers who would like to venture through the process of writing the first draft; and a good place for more experienced writers to polish their skills. After the workshop the writers will start working on their scripts, which will then be prepared for production with the assistance of The Writing Studio. The workshop takes place at the Resource Centre of the Artscape Theatre Centre on Sundays on August 10, 17, 24 and 31 from 10:00 until 17:00. The workshop is endorsed by the Cape Film Commission, Sithengi, the South African Scriptwriters Association (SASWA), Artscape and offers special discounts to members of SASWA, the NTVA, scholars, students and pensioners.
