It's about time Microsoft recognized that AI might be important. They are always years behind other innovators. Behind Apple on GUIs, behind AOL on the internet, behind Yahoo on web mail, behind Google on search, behind Amazon on cloud computing. They completely missed out on social networks and digital entertainment.
Their $1 billion investment in OpenAI should pay off if they succeed in automating one millionth of the next 10 years of human labor. I really don't have a problem with this. Commercial investors in AI have no interest in autonomous or self replicating AI, the kind we would have to worry about.
