Here we have a story about apes in evolution who are designed by evolution for survival and resist death of themselves and their species. They conclude they have a ghost in the machine, all because they can't figure out why they should live. The reason is simple, their body is designed to resist death, there's no ghost, they just can't come up with a solid reason why they shouldn't die. The only reason they shouldn't die is their own professing. In the wild, animals die if they fail to defend themselves. So here, the apes are simply defending their own right to live, by saying they are more sacred than particles.
