@Matt, just treat his question with the answer you believe in, for example whether he asked me how GPT works, or my AI works, or how a human brain works, or what job he should get, or what is the coolest toy to buy at Walmart, I will ALWAYS answer him back with this: "my AGI plans", which is what I've talked about, built, written about, etc all this time, it's all that's on my mind and it answers every question no matter which word is used I know what he is asking for. Notice my take on understanding talks about atoms, rocks, what Life is, how brains solve problems, etc? I understood what he wanted and so I gave an answer. And yes, the word specifically, "understanding", is, while just prediction, it does have some meaning, and it does not have much more meaning.
Getting into the meat of "understanding", one might say you have some things on your plate, beans, peas, bread, in groups, and know which relate and by how much, and which should be the last to eat and first to eat, and how much this plate to look at costed, and how many other plates exists. And how a bean can transform into a bread. Though all of this is prediction/ patterns, it more exactly can be separated into specific function like exponential function, related words, RL, multi-agents, multi-modal, body data collection, etc. So there's no way around patterns, it's all you can leverage, but we can kinda use the word understanding to look at things in a different light, a bit, yes. Asking if you understand may mean do you recognize that apple, or why the goal should be AGI and not golfing and doing nails at a building? Do you understand why to have teammates? Do you understand how related what words are to this word/ apple?
