Amazon's Audible pays authors $1.00 for every audio book d/l - with wh. authors are v. happy. So the answer may - and probably does - lie in different forms of marketing and perhaps advertising and P.R. We are in times of major change. I suspect that the donation approach isn't a good one (however well-intentioned), or at any rate not a major solution, because not as efficient as a free market framework.
