The fact is computers are able to do many things much better than humans
when it comes to processing certain kinds of information.  It makes all the
sense in the world to add functionality to an already powerful and mature
technology rather than trying to reinvent the wheel.  It would be like
forgetting about current
propulsion technology and trying to invent a contraption that flies to the
moon using wooden sticks and feathers.
