you don't understand multi-disciplinary disjoint-background communication. I
don't either, if judging by the way I have been explaining. I want to work
with a simplistic model of the retina. A simplistic model of a physical
system is one where only one or a few features of the system are abstracted,
because they are believed to be essential and sufficient to explain the
phenomenon of interest. The other features are ignored for the time being. 

Simplistic models evolve. You start with one, show that it does have a
potential to explain the phenomenon of interest, evaluate the limitations,
and expand it with new features. This is where you patch. In the model, not
in the theory. There is ample room to patch. Virtually every single one of
the sophisticated models we now use in engineering to solve multi-physics
problems has evolved in this way. 

For the retina, I want to abstract the causal relation light => signal, and
the adjacency relations of sensing elements. I don't want to add color or
any other properties of the light. Or of the retina. I know it works because
I already tried and it worked. I also determined the limitations. They are
scale and automation. So the next step would be a larger scale and more
automation. 

This second step is necessary because it will help us the determine what the
following step should be. It will allow us to learn from experience. Without
knowledge, we can only play a guessing game.
