A warning about Xilinx FPGAs is that routing time is quite slow (i.e. can be tens of minutes), though computation is fast once routing is done. They're OK so long as one doesn't need to change the circuit very often...
Hugo de Garis and I played with some neural nets on Xilinx FPGAs in Xiamen, a few years ago....
