Well, to accelerate the progress of civilization, you just need a few more 
years of progress.
Then you have a man-machine symbiosis with machine components that are more
advanced - and thus a more advanced civilization.

Machine intelligence is useful now.  We don't need to wait  until "human level" 
intelligence
to see the benefits.  That is just gradualism.
