Also the lack of research opportunities. The other day I was talking to a master's student whining to a PhD student because he want to do bio-physics but Hong Kong's universities don't offer anything in that area -- exactly like your comp sci student's whining in Xiamen. I imagine young researchers all over Asia are in the same predicament... This is my impression of the education system in a western country such as the US as compared to Chine / Asia: [image: Inline image 1] China has 5 times the population of USA but education opportunities are so rare that the "area under the curve" is actually smaller than the US. Here students are often complaining about "beureacracy" holding them back but actually it is the structure of the education system that is a mismatch to population size that is the problem.
