If everything is constant, and for a simple task I would suggest 3 tries before giving up or reviewing the process. Three is a ballpark off the top of my head number that is often used in retry attempts.
The thing is, many if not most tasks have a skill level on a level of mastery so it would be hard to map the probability of the task being achieved. One of my tasks is to "learn maths", and have been trying for a couple of years now - I haven't failed as I understand it takes time.
