Maybe it has to do with the purpose of this reality? It's not a sterile
sandbox. The desire to accumulate money is a) the symptom of a high
entropy, low quality consciousness with a weak signal/noise ratio (i.e.
less potent) and b) not in accord with the purpose of this reality.
Clearly you as a software engineer would be able to implement a virtual
reality with a certain purpose that features a mechanism which creates a
bias towards a certain outcome? The desired outcome in our case is high
quality consciousness which is trustworthy enough in order to be able to
interact with a larger and less restrictive reality (causality and
space-time are implementation based restrictions within this virtual
reality just like the amount of pixels you can jump in Super Mario Land
represents an implementation based restriction) and the wish to become
rich is not a sign of a high quality, ego- and fearless, trustworthy
consciousness.
You just have to accept the possibility that this in fact is a virtual
training environment for consciousness - "created" by evolution - just
like World of Warcraft represents a virtual training (or rather an
entertainment) environment - just one level lower in the consciousness
fractal and less sophisticated. Just wait until we will have
self-evolving, procedurally created games based on a probabilistic game
engine ... then the analogy will become even clearer.

1. If this works, then why aren't you rich?
