Okay, it seems that I should add some detail to my anti-uploading stance. I am not an uploader and I don't support uploading, especially with respect to myself.
That said, there does seem to be two categories of uploaders. First, there are the "porch uploaders". These people see uploading as an alternative to death and see it as a means for getting another go-round. On balance, I don't have any problem with that. They see a choice between uploading and death, and if you accept that as a dichotomy, then it is reasonable to choose uploading. It is also reasonable to chose death in that case, but then it's more of a coin-flip or a value judgement. Porch uploaders do not have a specific teleology and do not propose anything that would negatively impact people who do not chose to upload. Because of that, I don't really care because it falls under morphological and neuromorphic freedom and should be treated as a basic right. The hard uploaders, on the other hand, have a very different outlook. They believe that uploading should be achieved as soon as possible, and implemented universally as soon as it can meet their definition of safety. They see no future for organic life, no alternate courses of evolution, no possibility for even any revision or improvement of their own meme-plex. They propose an absolutely cataclysmic teleology that would obliterate life as we know it, and everything we value in our current incarnations not only here on Earth but across the universe. =\ It is this later group that I rail against because it precludes all other evolutionary paths and because it just plain sux. =\ It denies all ambitions that aren't scanning your brain into a computer simulation. Basically, if you don't work for a laboratory studying mind uploading, then whatever you are doing is merely killing time while you wait for the uploading research to complete and the singularity comes and uploads you and ushers in the "post upload era" where biological life will, at best, be keept around until it finally relents and allows itself to be uploaded. =( -- IQ is a measure of how stupid you feel.
