I kinda agree with this, actually, based on my limited but nontrivial
knowledge of the Quran...

However, I don't think it matters much.

What matters is not what is the most straightforward interpretation of the
Quran from a modern Western rationalist, literalist perspective.

What  matters are the cultural traditions of which the Quran is a part.
And some such cultural traditions (e.g. ISIS) are toxic, others (e.g
Sufism) are no more toxic than most human cultural groups/beliefs, and have
unique and wonderful positive aspects...
